Free NYSWYSA Coaches Workshop to Feature Manfred Schellsheidt

Free NYSWYSA Coaches Workshop to Feature Manfred Schellsheidt

In conjunction with the NYSWYSA Annual General Meeting, the 2015 NYSW Coaches Workshop will be held on Fri/Sat, November 6/7, 2015 at the Rochester Airport Marriott Hotel (Lecture) in Rochester, NY and the Doug Miller Family Sports Park (Field Sessions) in Spencerport, NY.   This year’s workshop will feature Manfred Schellscheidt, one of the most revered and respected coaches in the United States.

Schellscheidt, one of the most influential soccer coaches in the United States and widely known as a mentor to Bruce Arena, Bob Bradley and Dave Sarachan, will headline this year’s free coaching workshop. Born in Germany, Schelldheidt moved to the US when he was 23-years-old. While vacationing here, he was recruited to play professionally by the Elizabeth Sports Club. Schellscheidt had a successful career playing in the North American Soccer League and the American Soccer League before coaching as a player-coach.

In 1970, Schellscheidt became the first person to earn a US Soccer Federation A-License. His coaching resume includes vast experience at the youth, college and professional level. He has coached at every level of the US Men’s National Team including stints with the 1975 U.S. Men’s National Team and the 1984 Olympic Team. He also coached the US U17 MNT, assisted the U-20 MNT and more recently served a thirteen year tenure as the head coach for the U-14 BNT. Schellsheidt also spent 23 years at the helm of Seton Hall University where he routinely produced some of the nation’s most entertaining collegiate soccer teams while winning Big East Conference Championships, competing in multiple NCAA tournaments and producing All-Americans like US Men's National Team player Sacjha Kljestan. Schellsheidt is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame and a winner of the NSCAA's prestigious Bill Jeffrey Award.

Bruce Arena once said, ''I think everybody who runs across Manfred learns something. He provokes a lot of thought on how players think and the role coaches’ play. He is very good at trying to keep things simple and not making a meal of things. He doesn't make a big deal about the influence coaches have on players. He believes in making sure players are in a good soccer environment and that they learn from the game.''

Joining Schellsheidt at the workshop will be NYSWYSA Director of Recreation Soccer, Chris Pacilio, and NYSWYSA Assistant Technical Director, Scott Craig, who will present both a classroom and a field session that will focus on “Organizing a Recreation Festival in Your Community”.

Coach Schellscheidt will present a lecture on Friday evening at 8pm at the Rochester Airport Marriott entitled, “A Conversation About Youth Soccer and Player Development”.  On Saturday, he will conduct two field sessions at 9:15am and again at 1pm.  Coach Pacilio and Coach Craig will conduct their Recreation session on Saturday at 10:45am.  All field sessions will take place at the Doug Miller Family Sports Park on Saturday.

Admission is FREE but attendees must register for the Workshop by November 5, 2015.
