1st NYSW team to advance to National Championships ----- 5 other teams make it to semi-final round

The Rochester Junior Rhino's U-15 Boys team has won the Snickers Region 1 Championships.  They defeated New Jersey's PDA 2-0 in the finals match on July 2nd .  The Junior Rhino's found themselves at Regionals as a wildcard after an Eastern Penn entry dropped out.  On their way to the finals, they won Group D by defeating Maryland 4-1, New Hampshire 4-1, and Vermont 6-0.  They went on to beat PA West 3-1 in their semi-final match.  The team is coached by Chris Apple.

As the Snickers Region 1 Champion they advance to compete for the national title at the Snickers US Youth Soccer National Championships to be held at the Maryland Soccer Complex, Germantown, MD July 23-28.

This is the first New York State West Youth Soccer team to advance to the national tournament.  Congratulations to the Junior Rhinos U-15 Boys and GOOD LUCK at Nationals.

Five NY West teams won their Groups in preliminary play at the Snickers Region 1 Championships in Niagara Falls, and qualified for the Semi-finals played on July 1, 2002.

The U13 Boys, Rochester Junior Rhinos won group with wins over Virgina and Vermont and a 2-2 tie with PA west.   On Monday, the NY West State Champions lost to eventual Region 1 Champion, New Jersey 2-0

U14 Girls NY West Champion Rochester Junior Rhinos also lost their semi-final match to the eventual Region 1 Champion Maryland, by a 2-0 score.   The U14 team, coached by Addidas National Girls Coach of the year for 2001, Dan Shoniker, qualified by winning their group with wins over Vermont, Maine and Delaware while conceding only one goal.

The U15 Boys Wild Card entry from NY West was a late replacement for an Eastern PA team that dropped out earlier in the week.   The Rochester Jr. Rhinos team had only a couple days notice that they were going to join the tournament at all.    They won their group, beating Maryland, New Hampshire and Vermont, before downing PA West in the semi-final, 3-1, and then downed New Jersey 2-0 to win the Snickers Region 1 Championship and a ticket the the Snickers National Championships in Maryland, later this month.

The U16 Boys entry for NY West, Syracuse Blitz Samba Beat, were Region 1 Snickers Champions in 2000 as U14 Boys, and they cruised through their group qualifying downing New Hampshire #1 and the Wild card, New Hampshire #2, along with a key 3-1 victory over Virginia.   However, they could not overcome Eastern Pennsylvania in the semi-final, dropping a 3-0 decision.

The Greece Cobras were the U16 Girls entry from NY West and they downed Maryland 4-1, and Vermont 4-0, before losing to New Jersey, 2-0 in their last qualifier, both teams finishing at 2-1.   But thanks to a Maryland 4-0 drubbing of NJ the day before, the tie breakers fell the Cobras' way and they faced Eastern Pennsylvania in the semi-final Monday, dropping a 2-1 decision to the team that was runner up to Virginia in the championship, 1-0 in OT.

In other news from Regional Cup, the Junior Rhino's U-19 Girls were awarded the Snickers Fair Play Award.
