March 2010 Edition
Dick’s Sporting Goods now NYSW Sponsor
We are pleased to announce we have entered into a partnership with Dick’s Sporting Goods. As you may know the company was founded in the Binghamton, NY. To celebrate this development Dick’s is providing NYSW players, families, and coaches a special soccer discount coupon sheet.
Print your coupon sheet and visit any New York State store. Throughout the year Dick’s will provide soccer families opportunities for special shopping days and discounts on more than soccer gear, including fitness, golf, tennis and other equipment sold in the stores. The funds from the corporate sponsorship will be re-invested in programs to benefit players and coaches in NYSW. Welcome to the NYSW Soccer Family!
2010 State Cup News
The playdown draw was held in Cortland on Saturday, March 27. 140 teams are entered in the 2010 NYSW Cup, an increase of 15% in entries from 2009. The playdown brackets can be viewed on the state website. The home team is on the top of the bracket and is responsible for scheduling the match.
T-Shirt Contest Winner!
Over 4000 votes were cast in the contest and the winning design was created by Stephanie Plummer, a 3rd year student at RIT in New Media. Stephanie has been a member of NYSW since she began playing at age 8 and is now the coach of the Empire United Soccer Academy U12 Girls Red Team. Thanks for sharing your talents – both as a coach and a graphic designer – with us at NYSW.
Emma Firenze and the Region I Girls ODP 1995 Team is in Costa Rica
Emma is one of NYSW’s Regional players. The 95 girls are traveling back from Costa Rica as this story is being drafted. The US Youth Soccer ODP Girls 95 teams played their final matches of the tournament on March 29th. All four Regional teams took a day off before games 3 and 4 to visit Poas Volcano, do the Canopy zip-line tour, and compete in a team-building canoe relay race. The program creates an opportunity to play soccer for mentally and physically challenged children. Many watch their siblings play soccer each weekend and really enjoy being able to play in their “own” program according to their personal abilities. If your club or community is interested in learning more about starting a program, visit the state website or call the office. Financial resources as well as coaching expertise are available.
