River Flow Soccer Club MLK Day
By Deon K. Rodgers, President RFSC
For the second year in a row on Monday, Jan. 15, the River Flow Soccer Club in Rochester participated in community service activities on the day we pay tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Our organization has taken the position that the best way to pay true respect to Dr. King’s memory is to go out to show that his dream is still alive.

This year, members of the Pittsford Mustang Soccer Club joined us to volunteer at the Rochester Open Door Mission. More than 20 participants came out and helped sort clothes and organized items in the food pantry. The River Flow Soccer Club is more than just a travel soccer club; we are a community dedicated to bridging racial and economic divides. As we deal with the rise of poverty and violence in the inner city, we must still remain focused on Dr. King’s dream. The River Flow Soccer Club lives out this dream year round. We participate in numerous community service activities throughout the year.

Soccer is the avenue that we use to bring the kids in. While they’re with us, we teach more than just soccer; we teach them about life. We may not create the next soccer star but we will create the next leaders of our community. Soccer is a great sport because it crosses all barriers; we must continue to show our children a better way.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said: "I have a dream that one day my four little children will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."
